ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK
Mt. Meru is Tanzania’s second highest mountain (after Mount Kilimanjaro), and its summit is just at 14,980 feet (4566m), Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain on the African continent. About 250,000 years ago, a massive volcanic blast blew away the entire eastern flank of the mountain and left it with the distinctive appearance it has today. The Mount Meru ascent passes through many different vegetation zones. Even though it’s a lower and shorter climb than Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is a tough climb in its own right and shouldn’t be under-
The dry forest of the lower region gives way to a dense mountain rainforest, which then turns into a scrubland. Towards the top of the mountain, the vegetation consists of heath and moorland and is then finally replaced by the stunning barren alpine deserts. As the flora changes the wildlife does too. During the ascent, you will regularly come across large game such as Elephants and Buffaloes and possibly Leopards. Overnight at Coffee Lodge.
Lions are not residents although they’re known to visit, and stay, especially during the dry season.
In the park you will be able to do walking safaris which include forest walks and game drives.JEKTours and Safaris recommends this park for bird watching and for walking safaris, also for the spectacular views of Mount Meru. The best time to view Mount Meru is December to February.
